27 April 2020, Monday — Coronavirus Digest from Japanese Morning TV News Part 1 (of 3): Infections
Day 001 of doing these daily posts continuously.
Although I started doing Covid19 posts on April 20 2020, I took a few days off for my mental health. I got up this morning and picked up some stuff from the morning news, and that was the beginning of doing these continuously for over two years.
See photo captions for stories.

The headlines today:
New infections in Tokyo drop below 100
“Careful consideration” about extending the State of Emergency (or not)
Parliamentary discussion of the additional budget (for the 100K per person and support of businesses)starts today
Bank of Japan considering further monetary easing measures
Comment:
And Maho Kuwako is back on the morning shift. Yay. The other girl sure smiled a lot while she delivered the bad news.

13441 total cases in Japan, a rise of 210 on Sunday, with 12 new deaths. Figures for the weekend and even the first day or two of the week are typically low, but this still looks like a drop.
Photo 03
72 new cases in Tokyo on Sunday is the first time in 13 days for the number to drop below 100. The total for Tokyo is nearing 4000 though. (How long did it take to jump from 2000, I wonder…I could check but nah…)

Here are the numbers for Kansai.
Photo 05
30 new infections in Kansai (again, don’t forget we’re talking Sunday)
Photo 06
And two new deaths bringing the total to 65.

In-hospital infections, including infections of staff, are continuing to rise.
(I didn’t cover it myself but last week there was a case of a nurse who tested positive who was then asked to work anyway – on the Covid ward – as they couldn’t find a replacement for her)
Comment (regarding the nurse who worked on the covid ward):
DM: Namiya Rehabilitation Hospital in Ikuno-Ku (Osaka). I work in the same area
SY: Yeah, over a hundred people have tested positive at Namihaya so it’s not surprising they couldn’t get any cover…
DM: Well, I guess that anyone around there could be at risk. There’s a huge shoutengai, Korea Town and Tsuruhashi nearby.

The 30 new cases for Sunday in Kansai included in-hospital infections at institutions mentioned last week: Kobe Chuo Shimin, Meijibashi, etc.

148 infections among the crew OF FOREIGNERS aboard the cruise ship in Nagasaki.
Comments:
PC: Thought all cruises were cancelled. My folks had one booked, then cancelled, then booked another, that also cancelled. Mad World.
SY: There are no passengers.aboard. “Just” 600 crew. It’s here for repairs
PC: Damn. Surely Thailand or Vietnam does cheaper repairs
SY: “The ship was originally due to undergo repairs in China but Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., a unit of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd., eventually received the repair order due to the virus outbreak, which was first detected in the central Chinese city of Wuhan in late 2019”
That’s pretty ironic isn’t it?

One serious case has been hospitalized in Nagasaki city, but the rest of the crew are still on board.
Photo 11
Except for the crew necessary to actually sailing the vessel, the authorities are hoping to disembark and repatriate crew members who test negative WITHOUT having them do 14-day observation first.

Finally, a 20-something female student in Kumamoto who had been discharged from hospital got ill and tested positive again.
